After twelve months at Samohi I moved to England where I graduated from London School of Economics. I pursued and completed a degree in Management and then went to work at Microsoft. My specialty was human resources and that has blossomed into a second career in the fields of microeconomics and resource management. I was married to my first wife, a very nice but troubled woman, so I divorced her. I married the right woman, Jane Austin (no, not THE Jane Austin) in 1990. We had a very colourful wedding ceremony in a 1000-year-old church near Haywards Heath, St Mary's Church in Slaugham, England. We have two children together, Edward and Elizabeth as well as a wonderful Welsh Corgi named Max, and we currently reside near Abby Road, St. John's Wood London UK.

What are their names and ages? Laura Keiko Gilah Ackerman (21)/ (we adopted a second child from China). Do you have any grandchildren? No. What did you aspire to be in high school? Lawyer. What did you become? Historian. Name your favorite songs/groups/TV shows/movies in high school: Bob Dylan, Carole King, Rolling Stones, Temptations, Tops, Supremes, Spinners. Who/what were your favorite teachers/classes? Senor Miranda- Spanish; Mr. Kelly, history. What was your most memorable/embarrassing moment in high school? Telling my high school principal I was still going to the anti-war demonstration-- despite what he said. If I knew in high school what I know now, I would have... not been so radical. Where is the strangest place you've "run into" a classmate? Punahou School-- in Honolulu, Hawaii. What do you enjoy doing in your "free" time? Swim! ming in the ocean, taking long walks with my family and our dog Kainoa, watching films and my wife's plays. Where have your travels taken you? All over the world; Many times to Russia as I have a PhD in Russian History (UC Berkeley). What philosophy do you live by? I just try to be a decent human being. What have you done that you are particularly proud of? Set up a nonprofit corporation that encourages students to serve the community. Anything else you'd like to share? Aloha to all my classmates. Hello All, Just a quick update......Living back in the "OC" after an 18 year adventure managing water districts around California. Now managing a water department for the City of Tustin, and enjoying the challenges of rebuilding an aging water system! Would be happy to hear from old fellow SAMOHI alums.....especially the Malibu crew [Ginny, Sandy, Eric, Lee, Cassie, Steve, Susan, Jen, et al!!!].

After a 21 year career on Capital Hill as a House and Senate Chief of staff and a somewhat shorter career as a consultant, I opened a Washington office for the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. In this position I am in charge of all of Penn's federal relations and oversee all of the University's activities in Washington, D.C.

After being born and raised in California, my husband Doug and I, up and left the state to retire and live in the state of Washington. We love our hiking and nature, which are plentiful here on the Olympic Peninsula! We still have family and friends in CA, therefore we will be visiting often. Keep in touch. |

After my 6 months at Samohi I moved to Hawaii where I graduated from Kalani High School. I pursued and completed a degree in Physics then went to work at Hughes. My specialty was optics and that has blossomed into a subspecialty in infrared optics and now infrared and emissions microscopy. I was married to the wrong woman so I divorced her. I married the right woman, Cricket Blake in 1992. We had a very interesting marriage ceremony in a 2000 year old temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. We have 2 children together.
Currently, I am a part owner in a microscope company. These microscopes are used in the semiconductor industry.

From the Spring 2008 issue of Viking News: Jeffrey Bell Zekas has seen many changes during his 35 years as a government employee, some of those changes implemented by him. He has done everything from promoting mowers and mulching over chemical spraying, to running small but efficient litter removal crews. He was one of the first supervisors to encourage recycling at state facilities. Also, he was an early advocate of eliminating pesticide use on state right-of-ways, combining native shrubs with the use of eco-friendly management techniques. "Not only do we need to change the culture, but we need to change the process", Zekas says, "The culture changes slowly, but we can change the process now". He also was an early proponent-- and later an active supervisor-- in the state’s workfare program, which required welfare recipients to work a minimum number of hours per month, in order to receive cash assistance. His main goal throughout his career has been to change the state’s way of thinking. To this end, he has consistently followed a simple work philosophy: If the state is run like a smart business, it will stay in business. To that end, Zekas has attacked waste and fraud with a passion unmatched by his cohorts. But this self-described workaholic does not believe in all work and no play. In mid-April 2008, Zekas and his wife Linda returned to Paris, both to visit friends as well as to enjoy long walks along the Seine. Wonderful people, brilliant art, sweet chocolate, awesome wine and incredible food highlighted their explorations beneath the city (in the famed catacombs) as well as above it, while riding the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower-- this in spite of his deathly fear of heights. And although he is retiring in 24 months, Big Z (as he is known to friends) has not slowed down his pace. His current schedule here at home has been increasingly busy. With the fiscal year winding down, and still no multi-year contract for Bargaining Unit Six employees, he will spend the coming year working with union rank and file to ensure passage of a fair contract. He also interviewed for the CDCR Counselor exam in Spring 2008. Now that he is focused on retirement-- and his many grandchildren-- Zekas is reflective about his contributions: "Courage and persistence are what make a man successful... And of course, a good wife." So, will he stayed retired after he leaves civil service? Zekas smiles and thoughtfully replies, "There are always huge opportunities, to help both your community, and the planet. And of course, you can never stop learning." [from an article by Robert Anderson, Lassen County Times] Jeff is an employee with the State of California (CDCR) who makes his home in Susanville, California and Peedee, Oregon. In addition to his official position, he volunteers for the Lassen High School Grizzly football team, while enjoying reading, hiking, traveling, snowboarding, and spending time with friends and family. Prior to working for CDCR, Jeff was employed with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services, California Department of Forestry/Fire Protection, Cal Poly State University, USDA Forest Service and UCSB. He has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California.

As of Fall 2001, I am teaching English at the State University of New York College at Oswego, New York, an old port city on Lake Ontario. I have been a professor of English on and off since 1989, interspersed with stints as an "education policy analyst" (whatever in God's name that is), an executive director (of the ALSC - or Association of Literary Scholars and Critics - not to be confused with the ALSC - the Association of Library Services for Children), and a scholar-in-residence at the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal. I write about literature and music, religion and anthropology, and the politics of education. I have been married to Susan for fifteen years. We have a son, Joseph, now seven years old. I enjoy hearing from any and all from SAMOHI. I would deeply appreciate hearing from, or hearing news of, either Geoff Sollee (72) or Bill McClure (also 72).

Wow - plenty has change in the 3 years since this was updated... A big accident in Idaho - broken back and bone in neck - thrown from a horse. So, no more marathons for me, however, I am almost as good as new after wearing a brace for 6 months and much PT. Kids are great - oldest, Jen is 29 and a nurse practitioner in Denver. Next one, Chris, 26, a computer programmer living in Brentwood and working for the company who owns My Space. Molly, 21, graduated early from UCSB with a double major from UCSB and is now working there as an academic advisor in the Spanish & Portguese Dept. And, lastly, Andy, 18, graduated Harvard-Westlake and won a scholarship through the Congress and German government to go to Germany for a year. He deferred The Cooper Union in New York where, upon his return, he will study Engineering. Not to be dull here with our empty nest, coincidentally, we are part of the "Nissan Relocation" and are moving to Nashville this summer. I immediately booked ! 3 return trips home and lots of trips for the kids to come out for a visit and my twin Cathy too!!! It seems like a nice place, but it is not Santa Monica!! I won't miss the 405 traffic mess. |

I loved reading this web page. I graduated from SMC as an RN and worked for many years. I helped deliver quite a few SM High alumnis' babies as I worked at SM Hosp in Labor and Delivery. I retired after I married Brad 16 years ago. We have a housefull of kids: Michael -14, Timmy - 10, Megan - 9 and Natalie - 7. I traveled alot before kids, and they have slowed my travels down a bit. I now travel all around Laguna Niguel carpooling. Peggy, (my twin) has started traveling like crazy. She just returned from Spain after visiting her daughter who is doing a year abroad.

Alive and well and living in Los Angeles. Married for 19 years, no kids. I still follow politics, and abhor injustice. Music continues to be a great passion, and, believe it or not, I have found a new passion in golf! In the pursuit of education, love, fun, and as full a life as possible, regrettably, I seem to have lost touch with all of you, especially my Samohi band and orchestra buddies. I hope that all is well with everyone, that your joys and victories have been many, and that your tragedies have been few.

I've been married for 35 years and have 2 children, Casey (34) and Elise (32). We moved to Sonoma County in 1988 after living in Texas, Louisiana and Colorado. I've been a nurse for the last 18 years. I received my PhD in 2003. I guess I'm a late bloomer. Now I'm a professor @ San Francisco State University. I love teaching and have just returned from a study abroad with students. When I'm not working, my husband & I enjoy sailing, hiking, traveling, taking long walks with our dogs, and hanging out with our kids (& their spouses - Dave & Trinity).

Dragged from SAMOHI, a wonderful first love, and several friendships going back to John Adams J.H., I was displaced to Florida after my sophomore year, a product of a divorce. A short time thereafter, I was notified that one of my best friends and his girlfriend had decided to take their own lives. Does anybody remember Arthur (Art) C. Cantero? He was very tall and lanky, about 6' 4", usually had a smile. Lived in a house fronting the beach just north of the pier with his family. How can such a good thing turn so bad so fast? I love him and miss him. We were 16.
Did anybody hear the story about one of Philip Horowitz's and my joy riding experiences in Phils' parents new Firebird? They would vacation and we would borrow the car at age 15. This particular time we were following a friend north on 12th or so just crossing Wilshire into dark residential. In an instant I saw what I thought was egg white across the windshield, that we had been egged, but, as events can unfold in slow motion, I realized off to my left in a dark field I had seen a flash, and the flash had illuminated a small cloud of smoke, we had been shot at. The shooter was an expert, perfect aim, driver's temple high, the bullet was deflected, ricocheting off a ¼ " piece of trim molding around the window and sending veins of cracks across its width. This was 1969 and I surmised he might have been a Vietnam vet. This was an introduction to my angel who would pull me back here for countless more times to come, like the time I had a main chute malfunction and spent too long trying to pull the pigtail through, assisting the hard pull with a left hand slug, breaking two of the three rivets that hold the handle to the chord, (I think I still have that in a box somewhere). My friends watching from the ground thought I was going to bounce for sure. I would have quite literally had I impacted the soft earth of the cattle ranch we jumped from, fondly named the SOD Farm, (Spot Of Death), hey, I didn't name it. I think I got a deployment at about 800 feet. I went back up on the next lift. Freefalling is a gas! |

I spent most of the seventies moving around California, alternately being a new-age-hippie type or political activist. I settled down in Berkeley, where I lived for 20 years in a housing co-op I co-founded. I moved to San Francisco in Spring '01 to live with my partner, Joe.
I'm an accountant specializing in not-for-profits and work with small, progressive organizations. Despite the wild '70s, I escaped HIV but many of the people who've been close to me haven't ... including my first boyfriend, Ken Welch ('71). I'd love to hear from old friends and fellow closet queers from Malibu Park and Samohi.

Frank was born April 7, 1954. He attended Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Middle School, studying drama, French and creative writing. After graduation, Frank worked as a cinema usher, meanwhile performing in various stage productions, both in Arcata and Los Angeles. He died July 24, 1975 from injuries sustained in an accident two nights earlier. Frank was survived by his mother Sally and his sister Ann, both living in Garberville at the time. I graduated from Santa Monica High in June 1972. I went on to attend Santa Monica College and California State University Northridge (CSUN). I received my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in August 1979 from CSUN. I then worked in the aerospace field at a number of aerospace companies where I worked as a software engineer / computer analyst in the Orange County area. In 1994, I moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest to the Seattle area. I got out of the aerospace field and progressed my career working as computer consultant for various commercial and biomedical companies including Microsoft. In 1998, I fell in love and married the woman of my dreams. We are now settled in the Everett area.

After SAMOHI went off to California Lutheran College then on to Texas Christian University where I majored in Speech and Language Pathology. Settled in Williamsburg, Virginia with my husband and two children. I work in the staff development department for Newport News Public Schools and am a Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist. Basically I work at getting teachers into the 21st century by integrating technology into their curriculum and lessons. |

Haven't seen anyone since the last reunion - will there be another? I'm still splitting my time between Gardena & Palm Springs. Busy being a handyman at both places. Haven't had much time for drafting, but still love doing house design & remodel. We lost our big dog just before Christmas, now we're down to just one - a Jack Russell/Chihuahua - a real pshychobitch. I still play a little tennis, but am really into badminton. If anyone knows someplace to play in the South Bay give me a call. |

Robbie died May 2, 1990. His truck rolled over near Red Rock Canyon on the 395. He was on his way to LA for an LA Dept of Water and Power Hearing on their destruction of the plant "root" watertable in the Owens Valley. He was a homebuilder and Secretary of Citizens of the Eastern Sierra. Rob was also a licensed paramedic and served as volunteer for the Bishop Fire Dept. He had lived in the Bishop area for several years and he and Alan Bartlett had climbed many "first ascent" routes in Eastern Sierra together. They focused their climbing in that area after a few years of doing all the worthwhile climbs in Yosemite. He's also climbed the Mexican peaks, in Alaska and in the Andes in Peru. He was married, no children. We've kept in touch with his wife constantly over the years. I still miss him a lot. He was 9 years my junior (Royal is between us in age) but Rob and I were very close. Royal's in the D.C. area and he and I undertake a number of technical accounting projects together in the course of any year. (written by Kip Dellinger, 8 November 2007)

Steve Devorkin is a Television Specialist with the State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). He is responsible for making all thing video at Caltrans. He just finished a documentary on the I-5 tunnel fire that gain statewide distribution. Prior to Caltrans, Steve was a partner with Richard Mackson in Westside Processing, a professional lab in Santa Monica. Steve was a improvisational comedian, TV and film actor and stay-at-home dad from 1985-1992. He has been married to Lynne Webber since 1983, and has three children: Daniel, 23; Amanda, 20; and Amy Rose 14.

Rob Smith (71)and I have been married now 28 years. He retires from the Santa Monica Fire Dept in about a year or so. Our oldest son, Nicholas graduated from Cal-State Fullerton 1 1/2 year ago and now works for "Blizzard" Gaming Computer company in Irvine and doing well. Danny our youngest is in his senior year in high school (yipee!!) and also doing well. I have been the Stay-Home Mom for the last 17 years, being a volunteer at the schools and the Red Cross and busy going the "River" and Mexico. Rob & I took the kids to the Big Island about 2 years ago and saw Bob Frost. He was doing very well. Also, this year was very sad due to the passing of one of my oldest & dearest friends, Holly Grace Spevak. She passed away in May 07, from breast cancer. I miss her very much. Hope all is well with my friends. Drop me a line sometime. |

After graduating from Samohi, I served a mission in Chile for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints...loved the country and the people! I attended Cal State Dominguez Hills, married Marilyn Barton, and moved to Utah. We have been here for 28 years now, but visit southern California four or five times a year...still miss the beach!! We have two children...Kristen, who is married and is soon to have our second grandson, and Adam, who is also married and working for a software company here in Salt Lake. I still work as a store director for Smith's Food and Drug. Life is Good! |

Sharon Erspamer passed away Sept. 29, 2004 at home in Santa Cruz after an 18-month battle with cancer. She was 50. Born in San Diego, she graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1972. She attended UCLA, then transferred to UC Santa Cruz and graduated with a degree in biology in 1976. After some international travel, she settled in Santa Cruz in the early 1980s. As proprietor of Design Science, she combined her natural science background and artistic talent to create beautiful interpretive signs and graphics. Her work is scattered around many natural spots in Northern and Central California — Monterey, Half Moon Bay, Sacramento, Palo Alto — but most extensively in Santa Cruz County: Neary Lagoon, Natural Bridges, Arana Gulch, Lighthouse Field, Wilder Ranch, Loch Lomond, Watsonville Wetlands, Pogonip and several Santa Cruz state parks. She was an environmentalist and animal lover who enjoyed reading, gourmet cooking and fine wines, music, gardening and traveling. She liked to take long walks with her dog Rocco. She was stubborn, willful, compassionate, generous, brave and beautiful. She is survived by husband Carl Rohrs of Santa Cruz; parents Franco Erspamer and Edna Erspamer ('48) of Santa Monica; sisters Elaine Marchant ('71) of Centreville, Ala., Carla Fantone ('78) of Santa Monica and Judy Amos ('79) of Santa Monica; brothers Robert Erspamer ('74) and Steven Erspamer ('81)of Hood River, Ore., and Thomas Erspamer ('79) of Santa Monica; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

After a year at Santa Monica College, I served an L.D.S. mission in Chile (a beautiful country!), and then attended Cal State Dominguez Hills and UCLA. Married Marilyn Barton in 1976, and moved to Utah in 1980. We love it here! I'm still in the retail grocery business, having been a store director for Smith's Food and Drug since our move here (with a break in between to try something different). We have two geat kids - Kristen, 21, who just recently got married to a super young man, and lives close by. Adam is 18, and attends WEstminster College in Salt Lake, and plays on the golf team there. We are looking forward to a 30 year reunion! If you are in the Salt Lake area, give us a call. |

Just a note to hi to my friends out there.....you know who you are! Wow! Someone just brought to my attention that my last "update" was pretty dated so I thought I'd just fill you in on the latest scoop.... Bob & I will be celebrating our 29th Wedding Anniversary this May......daughter, Carly, is 24 now...graduated and working for a production company in Santa Monica. Has a great guy, Justin, to share life with (we love him too!). I have started several businesses (again) which I absolutely love, so.... ~ Life is pretty damn good. |

After 20 years in Carson City NV I moved to Port Angeles WA. I'll never need to move again, just love it here!. In 2000 I married a great gal, Pamela. We own a composite's shop, we make graphite fishing rods, baseball bats and things that fly in space. Every day we try and get a little golf in. Bad news is she kicks my butt! My husband, Tim and I have been married for almost 30 years. Our daughter Katie is 24 and graduated from Long Beach State. Our son Daniel is a junior at Mission Viejo High School. And swims for the Nadadores. I still work from home doing medical billing. Our dogs Nikki and Little Bit keep me company. I keep very busy with my work and family, especially the swimming part. Holly Grace Spevak Feb. 2, 1954 - May 9, 2007 Camarillo resident and Ventura College of Law Professor Holly Spevak has died after a long battle with breast cancer. Spevak, 53, was an adjunct professor at the school who taught several courses, including legal writing. She was also an academic adviser.
She died about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at home, surrounded by family members and friends. This is the second staff member the college has lost to cancer in the past year. Dean Richard Goldman died in late September. "We're still reeling from that loss," said the new dean, Heather Georgakis. "This is very difficult, because Holly was beloved by her students." "I was a student of hers and friend of the family's," said Thomas Moormeister, who is awaiting his bar exam results in Westlake Village. "She taught me how to be a good, ethical attorney, and the meaning of perseverance."
She was the kind of teacher who was always there if a student needed something, he said. Spevak was clearly well-liked, judging by the number of comments posted on her business Web site, spevaklaw.com. "There are over 100 quotes, and the majority are from today," friend and business associate Sandra Rubio said Thursday. "She impacted so many lives and we will always be indebted to her." Spevak is survived by her husband, Guy Spevak, and children, Noah, 27; Mathew, 24; and Sasha, 19.
The family released a statement saying that the law and teaching were "only a small part of her life. "The statement also reads in part: "She positively affected the lives of everyone she came in contact with and will be loved and missed always." --from The Ventura County Star on May 11, 2007

HI everyone...this is Lori. I graduated from USC as a voice performance major, then started performing throughout Southern California. I performed several major Operatic roles in the area, including both Pamina and Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute by Mozart, Marie in The Bartered Bride by Smetana, and Baby Doe in Baby Doe by Douglas Moore. I married Stephen Ascani in 1981, and during 1983 we moved to Springfield,MA. While there I performed Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann by Offenbach, Norina in Don Pasquale by Donizetti and Monica in The Medium by Menotti. I also formed a vocal quartet and we performed throughout New England. For about 15 years after college, I performed as much as I could and enjoyed every minute of it. My son, Sean Micael Ascani, was born in 1986 and my daughter, Katherine Elaine Ascani, was born in 1988. In 1990, we moved as a family to Phoenix, AZ and lived there until 2000. During our time in AZ, I raised my 2 children and started directing church choirs. I was on staff at St. Timothy's Catholic Community (children's center, from volunteer to Supervisor), Holy Cross Catholic Church (choir director) and St. Andrew's Catholic Community (choir director and volunteer coordinator for Parish). Once again we moved, this time to Murrieta, CA, where we are currently residing. I love it here, and I am glad to be back in CA again! My son is now 22 and is working towards his degree in criminal justice. My daughter is currently at Chapman University as a voice performance major. I have been a private vocal teacher in the area for the past 6 years, and I have students place in several major vocal competitions throughout San Diego, Riverside, Orange County and LA County, including the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards. Both Katherine Ascani (2006) and Kara Sainz (2009) have been Spotlight Finalists (awarded $4,000 and free tuition to Aspen Music Festival)and 2 other semi-finalists (2008 & 2009) all in the classical voice division. I'm so thrilled to find Samohi's web page! I missed out on graduating from Samohi, because my family moved back to New York just before my senior year--but I still consider Samohi my "official" high school, and would love to hear from my classmates. I'm a senior editor at Town & Country magazine and have been married to Paul Gross, a family physician, for 10 years; we have 2 daughters, ages 6 and 8. I still doodle all the time (as anyone who sat next to me in class will remember); I also play classical piano quite a lot. We do all the usual parental juggling, too--taking Cara and Aster to gymnastics and basketball classes, playdates, etc. It's busy, but we're having fun! |

I really enjoyed discovering this site and reading about what the last (almost) 30yrs have been for everyone. Life is a wonderful teacher. My life has also been full, yet not exactly the fairy tale I would've written for myself in some ways. Losing my sweet husband, Rex, of 20yrs to cancer was definitely not in my plans. But my children, all six of them, continue on with their lives and are stronger for the things they've learned through their challenges. I, too, have had to find my strengths and be resilient. I met another widower, Bill Lewis, and we married in 99 and try to support each other in raising our children. We live in Palo Alto where I also teach orchestra and band part time at my daughter's middle school.
I do have many fond memories of Samohi, in fact with my sister still teaching there, I still hear a lot about Samohi. I'd love to hear from you and see how life is treating you. |

Hi! I write children's books and travel, speak, and am an instructor in UCLA Extension's Writers Program--what could be better? My newest is a picture book called NEW YEAR AT THE PIER--A Rosh Hashanah Story. It's about how we celebrate Tashlich, a part of Rosh Hashanah, at our local pier. It's a story of how to say I'm sorry, how to accept apologies, and the fun of this waterside ritual. The illustrations are terrific watercolors by an award-winning Canadian children's illustrator. Really wonderful. I have a great kid--now a freshman at UC Berkeley--a great husband, a great (old) dog, a great pond, blah, blah, blah. Life is good!

U.S. Army 1973-1976 Swinging on wrenches, as an auto mechanic, for the past 26 years. Should have paid more attention to the books in school. Oh Well, could be worse, I could be stuck in an office all day. Actually, I'm doing just fine - My wife, Karen (36) and I met in Thousand Oaks CA - we were married in Las Vegas and like it so much we moved here in 1993. Richard Karst has enjoyed a rich variety in his music and recording career. Being a professional musician since age 15, he has had considerable experience on both sides of the microphone. While still in high school, he played first chair trumpet under the direction of choral conductor Roger Wagner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. He has also performed under the batons of Nelson Riddle, John Williams and Ferde Grofé. Richard has performed in ensembles opening for such diverse acts as Joan Baez, Sheila Chandra, the Carribean All-Stars, and War, and he has shared the stage with Waylon Jennings, Taj Mahal, Dave Liebmann, Daniel Brubeck, members of Tower of Power, Mickey Dolenz, Fantuzzi, and Mongo Santamaria's band. Richard is a voting member of both the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), the recording industry organization that anually presents the Grammy Awards, and the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS). A children's music album he produced was considered for a Grammy nomination in 1996, and another album of devotional music he produced was considered for a Grammy nomination in 1997. Today, Richard and Daren continue to produce music by talented new artists. The most recent CD release from KC Records, "Busy On You" by blues master John Morris, features the original Morris composition "Mystery Train" which was covered by blues legend John Lee Hooker. Current projects include the upcoming release of My Stupid Brother 's first album, Richard's Concrete Buddha CD, and Chris Pumphrey's moving tale of the shooting of Tibetan pilgrims by Chinese border guards, September 30th. Richard lives in California with his vocalist-composer wife Lalita.

I'm writing this in April 2004. The reunion in '02 was fun. It was great to see people, some of whom I met at Franklin Elementary. April, Elaine, Fred, Jim, Bruce, to name a few. Good people all. I live in Humboldt County after spending about three different years living in Europe. I had a double major at UCLA, Linguistics and French. Later, in '84, I returned to UCLA for a teaching credential to teach French and a Master's in Education, but I am way too shy to teach! So much for that idea! So I ended up being a writer, making a living mostly doing educational writing (textbooks, standardized tests, etc.). I also love writing stories and such, and I thoroughly enjoy doing weird watercolor paintings. I have a big wild garden with statues of Quan Yin, St. Francis, and such -- and an aviary that my five parrots spend sunny days in. They live inside and I try to give each one enough attention. (I get bitten if I don't!) They talk to varying degrees, so it gets pretty hilarious around here. Also pretty messy, I'm afraid! I also live with a dog, a cat, a son graduating from high school this year, and a husband of 20 years (we've been married 20, he's not 20 years old) who wonders how he ended up with someone so eccentric. I've had strange spiritual experiences and go on an annual silent retreat for a week when I listen to a spiritual teacher I love to hear, paint, walk in the woods (I live near the woods but don't get out in them nearly enough!). And did I mention I have a tendency to ramble? Well, love and blessings to you all, be happy, write to me, I remember many of you -- though probably not many remember me. People used to ask me, "Why are you so QUIET?"...

I am a producer/writer/director who recently finished two movies--the first, FROM RUSSIA TO HOLLYWOOD, starring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Leslie Caron, Patricia Neal, etc., etc., was a finalist at several film festivals and got a full-page favorable review in VARIETY; I was producer on another film, a period mystery-drama, FLORIDA CITY, being released some time this year. I also have two Master's Degrees--one in business, the other in Counseling and Guidance. In addition to developing feature films for my production company and other movie studios, I am very busy raising four children--Alex, 19, a US Marine, Natalie, 17, Anna, 15, and Lillie, who just turned 5. I have been married to my wife Jane for almost 20 years, and boy has she kept me on my toes. Yiiiikes!
Life has taken a lot of interesting twists and turns, but I'm still looking forward to that Academy Award on my mantel. Anyone have five million for my next picture? I'll take cash, American Express or Traveller's checks.
I've lived a lot of different places over the years, worked as an actor/model in Europe (mainly in Paris and Barcelona), and just gotten into a whole helluva lot of trouble.
Thank goodness for my family and my kids--they make it all worthwhile. See you at the reunion, and don't be shy, even if you were one of the ones who pretended to be my friend, but were in reality a backstabbing sob... (just kidding).

I guess it is way past time for me to update my info since I have not been married or had the last name Phillips for quite a few years now! I am still living in California since returning from Alaska in 2000; I've been in Ventura since September. I have taken the past two years off of work to take a break and to have several adventures traveling around Europe. Now it is time to get back to work so I am looking for the next job or business plan. Would love to try working anywhere on the Danube River or somewhere like Prague, Budapest, Dubrovnik or Sarajevo. Any ideas for here or abroad? My background is in management, recreation, special events. And I love, love, love music! And beads! Any fellow beaders in the area?
I have two kids whom I adore: A 24 year old daughter who is married, living in London and starting graduate school at the London School of Economics in the fall....and a 21 year old son who is a musician and transferring to UCSD in the fall. Thank goodness they were not the trouble I was to my parents!

I guess it's time to update the profile some. After too many years in the grocery business (Payroll/HR), I have moved on. I retired from there and now work in downtown LA for Metropolitan Water District in their payroll department. I have 6 grandchildren ranging in age from 16 all the way down to 3. My oldest stepdaughter has 2 boys (14 & 16), my youngest stepdaughter has 2 girls (10 & 12), and my son has a daughter (6) and a son (3). They're what life is all about for us. Life has certainly been good for me. I've have been married for 31 years, where did the time go? We are happy and reasonably healthy if you don't count the aches and pains. I ran in to a fellow Malibu Park classmate commuting to work on the Metrolink a few months ago. It can really be a small world! I would love to hear from any fellow classmates. |

My SAMOHI years were some of the best of my life so far. I think about them from time to time and hope that life is well with my fellow classmates. As for me, I got married in 1992 to a wonderful teacher. We have 2 children. Kristen is 15 and Josh is 10. Yes, I started late. I worked in the food industry in Malibu in a market for almost 18 years. After injuring my back and having surgery, I went back to college and got a degree in Graphic Arts. I now work as a printer for the D.O.D. at Pt. Hueneme, Ca. The company I work for is called DAPS (Document Automation Printing Service). We live in Oxnard and are very active in our church. The older I get, the more I realize what truly is important in life. God has been good to me. I do keep in touch with a few of my friends from the old days from Samohi as well as Malibu Park Junior High School. I would love to hear from any of my fellow classmates. Richard is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers, National Press Photographers Association, Los Angeles Press Photographers Association, and the Aircraft Pilots and Owners Association, He has also taught photography workshops been a guest lecturer at universities and in industry and has consulted for several companies through the years in technical photography areas. His hobbies include; Designing home automation and IT systems. Golf, Tennis and Sport Shooting (Sporting Clays and Skeet) He currently lives in Rochester with his wife, Joy Bennett a 1972 Samohi classmate, and their fifteen year old daughter. It is not uncommon for the Macksons to come back to SM in the fall and take in a Viking Football game.

I got started in CB radio in 1970 at the tender age of 13. My parents had just moved us into a big house in northern Santa Monica where I got to start meeting new friends all over again. At Lincoln Junior high school I met some friends one of them, David Houtz, loaned me his extra CB radio and I was instantly hooked. What a world, out on CB radio. I met a number of people on CB radio, one of whom was Tom Mccoy (The Santa Monica Lion).
Tom picked up a part time job at the local Shell gas station, on the corner of 14th and Montana in Santa Monica, as a gas jockey (back in the days when an attendant pumped your gas for you, at no extra charge). I was one of the many people that hung around, shooting the breeze while he worked. It was then that he had picked up his famous VW bug. It sure was nice knowing someone with a car. I was too young to drive but I sure wanted a bug when I grew up. I remember he and John Moore doing races down Montana from 17th down to 14th. I also remember how devastated he was when John committed suicide a few years later, and how much more pain we all endured when John's father committed suicide just afterwards. I think it was then that I realized how big of a heart this guy had. He spent hours and hours with John's family, helping out any way he could. I was scared of all of the emotions going on in that house, and Tom just jumped right in a dealt with it. I'm pretty sure it was fro! m that point on that I knew I could trust Tom. I looked up to him as the big brother I never had.
Tom really became interested in Ham Radio at Santa Monica High School. He spent lots of time in Ronny Rindone's electric shop doing his best to mess up the class. One of my most fond memories was of him beeping out in Morse code on his VW horn while driving out of school parking lot one afternoon. What balls, you can't help someone like that. He seemed to also like making fun of the school's call sign in his radio contacts, referring to the call sign suffix TDI as Totally Dumb Idiot.
Tom left for the east coast for several years to continue his education in electronics. I met up with him again as he arrived in his new 1974 Pinto filled with some incredible electronic gadgets. I saw that car at Norms on Lincoln in Santa Monica with little lights blinking on the dash and big meters cleanly mounted in the custom center console and was instructed to not get to close as the alarm he had constructed was sure to electrocute me if I got too close. I remember hearing the Bee Gees on his stereo in this car so loud and full as to actually like the album. This was also the first time I had seen his hand built transistorized CB power amp capable of the wattage he was generating mounted in a compartment in the back of his Pinto complete with outside air venting. He had apparently discovered that he could cause florescent lights to energize in dark parking structure and closed gas stations by just keying up his CB with the big ass amp running. It was a lot of fun.
Tom got a real job with National Semiconductor and later Digital Equipment Corporation and rented several different apartments with roommates Cliff Thompson and Tim Forsyth on the Westside and in the valley. This came in real handy when my parents had finally had enough of me and booted me from the house. Tom took me in without a second thought making room for me on the kitchen floor, what a friend. I left for the navy shortly after this. I kept in contact with my friend though my younger sisters who had apparently taken an interest in them. They had kept me up to speed and in the loop by marrying two of my CB friends. I did manage to make it home for an occasional party at Tom's house.
I got my Ham license in 1991 and started actively enjoying my 435 career. I had started listening to 01-61 and then 435 back in 1988 and been building repeaters since that time. After years of explaining to Tom how "435 is just like CB radio in Santa Monica was" he finally broke down and got licensed and the rest is history.
As I type this, I am surprised to see that he had only been licensed for ten years. It seems longer, doesn't it? He had accomplished so much and made so many friends in such a short time. You all saw how much time and effort he put into field day and boy scout stuff.
I only knew him for 33 years and took completely for granted his friendship. I never thought that we wouldn't be friends for at least another 33 years.

I'm living in the Berkshires, Massachusetts with my sweetheart, 3 dogs, 1 ex-feral cat (no horses anymore) and 8 acres of gardens and farmland. I write screenplays for a living and am grateful I can do this far from the bumper to bumper life of the 405. (The winters, however, are wicked. I am still a Malibu girl in heart and temperament). I grow nostalgic thinking of our Samohi years and I'm sorry for the friends and the innocence we have lost along the way. Hi folks. I live sixty miles north of Los Angeles with Francie, my wife of twenty-nine years. My documentary film company, Timeline Films, is located in Culver City. I have a daughter, Greta, and a granddaughter, Olivia (born in 1997). I'm making documentary films, mostly about early Hollywood history, and developing a feature film. I still play viola and I sometimes conduct orchestras for recording sessions. A while ago I recorded a new musical score by Nigel Holton for the 1921 silent film "Little Lord Fauntleroy," starring Mary Pickford. The film with our score will be released on DVD in April, 2005. The last documentary I directed was "Complicated Women," which was narrated by Jane Fonda and premiered on Turner Classic Movies cable channel. Later this year we'll premiere a new documentary film on the life of famous film vamp Theda Bara. I hope I'll hear from some old friends. Best wishes to everyone!

I had the Brady Bunch experience of rearing and socializing six children (all grown) and now have seven Grand Children. After graduating Samo, I served as a Staff Sergeant in the Army. Came back to S.M. for a year or two and ended up moving to Texas. Met my wife in Germany in '75 and have been together ever since. We have 2 daughters and 2 grand daughters. Currently live in Austin, Texas, and have a great life here. I manage a Brokerage firm and have been blessed with a great life. How did I get here? In brief I enjoyed SM College for 4 years, attended an art school in SF, but dropped out and drifted about for several years. Ended up in a tiny town in Pennsylvania. Than back to school in UC Davis, getting a degree in Meteorology. Ultimately, got my hands on a Macintosh circa ’87 and have been doing graphic design ever since, primarily in the field of sustainable agriculture. Invited each of my parents to join me in Davis, where I cared for them through to their deaths due to lung cancer -- my mother Insley in ’98, and my father in ’03. I’ve been with my wonderful partner Klara for 15 years. We moved to Olympia WA in ’04 and married last year.

Greetings to SAMO classmates. I have been married for the last 18 years to Scott McCreary and we have two terrific sons, Aaron (13) and Miles(8). After getting my law degree at U.C., Scott and I moved to Massachusetts for 7 years where he completed a PhD at MIT in Environmental Policy. I worked at Harvard during that time - doing research on land use and environmental issues. When we returned to California in 1989 we settled in Berkeley. I have continued to practice environmental law full time until recently. I just left my San Francisco firm, and set up an office 5 minutes from home to work on other projects on a part time basis - so I can spend more time with the family. We have been having a blast together - went to London and France this summer. Scott has a consulting firm called CONCUR (check out their cool website at concurinc.com). Hope to attend the 30th reunion. |

Recently, Elle von Schuler was interviewed regarding her well-loved brother, Samohi alumnus Heinz Schueler, since “he rarely gets on the computer”. As some of you may remember, back at Lincoln Middle School, Heinz was in the Social Dance Club, a member of the A-9 Executive Board, and he participated in Weight-lifting and Wrestling Class, as well as A & B Tennis. Is Heinz still athletic? “Is the Pope german?” was Elle’s reply. At Samo, you may also remember Heinz portraying Victor Viking-- in between stints of football and tennis. Heinz’ only sister, Elle, who was older by one year, said about him recently, “We were very competitive, especially in sports. Heinz was my best friend, since we moved a lot. I was also two years younger than my classmates, having skipped a few years. We were very different. I the hippy type and he the ‘straight laced’ guy. I went to UCLA and have a biochemistry degree, Heinz went to SMC. I am a Vice President at Wells Fargo Insurance, and Heinz we! nt into entertainment and became a TV/personal trainer... He was very popular, I was more under the radar.” After graduation and attending college, Heinz travelled the world, since he was the international marketing director for both Joico and Matrix hair products. Heinz has since done movie stints on Baywatch and several movies overseas, as well as having been a personal trainer for many years to celebrities, and working at many gyms. He is happily married to a “wonderful detective” for LAPD, but presently does not have any children; however, he is a “great uncle” to Elle’s son, Ryan. Heinz recently moved from Santa Monica to Studio City. So how did their mom and dad inspire Heinz and his sister? “Always be the best, try your hardest, live life to the fullest and live correctly.” And are they proud of their kids? “Yes, very.”

After graduating in '72 I went to DeVry in Phoenix, AZ and graduated with a BSEE in '75. Following my interest in electronics I began working for Burroughs (now UNISYS) as a Technical Writer and advanced to national technical support for large mainframe communications systems. Jeannie and I have been married for 30 years and it's been great! After 3 years I went to work for Control Data in Santa Ana. We left the warmth of Southern California for frigid St. Paul, MN in '81. I spent the next six years working with a team of folks developing new communications systems called CDCNet. Andrew was born in St. Paul and we returned back to sunny Southern California in 1986 and I went to work for General Dynamics in San Diego. Brain was born in San Diego and we moved to Tucson in 1993 when Hughes (now Raytheon) bought General Dynamics. I am Reliability Engineering Section Head in charge of multiple programs and I enjoy my work a lot. Andrew our oldest son graduated from Pepperdine and is a Legislative Director in the California State Assembly. He is following his passion. Brian our youngest son is in his senior year at Arizona State University majoring in Kinesiology. My guiding light is my Lord Jesus Christ. My personal verse comes from Philippians 1:6 - for He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Pray for our president and our nation in this troubled world.

After graduating in 1972, I went to Chapman College and got my BS in biology. I worked as a lab researcher at Hancock Labs in Anaheim for a few years. I went back to school, UCLA, and got my BSN in nursing in 1981. I worked at UCLA for a two years where I met my husband, Rory. We married in 1983 and moved up to northern California. We have lived here for all but one year, 1985-86, when we lived in Atlanta, Georgia. My daughter, Jill, was born there in 1986. We moved back to California and settled in Davis. My son, Cody, was born here in 1990. Jill will graduate from UCSB this June (2008) and wants to go on to law school. Cody will graduate from Davis High in June and is getting ready to attend U. of Colorado at Boulder this fall. Time sure flies!! Feel free to email me or check out our family web page. Shelley passed away in July 2008, a victim of cancer. Her two girls and her family still live in Malibu. Shelley worked as a nurse for Kaiser Permanente and enjoyed raising thoroughbred race horses--something her daughters have continued to pursue. Shelley played the violin in the Samohi orchestra and was a truely funny individual. She married John Schubert (71) in 1973. A memorial service was held in Malibu in August 2008 where many people remembered all the kindnesses they had received from Shelley. She will be missed greatly. |

After graduation, I spent 20 years as a general contractor and owned a door and window manufacturing company in Ventura. Though I'm now divorced, I have two children, Darylin 11, and Cody 6. Both live in Ventura County. My mother still lives in Santa Monica in the same house I lived in when I was in high school. My twin brother, Farrell, moved to the Wasatch Mountains in Utah about 8 years ago and I fell in love with the small alpine valley he lives in so I decided to move there too. I built my log cabin home overlooking a private lake high in the Rocky Mountains southeast of Park City. I also went back to school and became a computer programmer. I now have my Microsoft Certified Solution Developers certification and work for a consulting firm in Salt Lake City. It's a long commute but it's worth it. I live where everyone else goes to take a vacation so, every time I come home, I'm on vacation! I was in California for the 1984 Summer Olympics and I'm looking forward to the 2002 Winter Olympics being held right in my back yard! Since the previous update, we have moved back to S0. California after 6 years of living in Ohio. I have taken an exciting assignment with Abbott Laboratories, the company I have worked for the past 24 years, as Western States Sales Manager. Our time in Ohio was very rewarding but it is great to be back home close to family, friends and of course close to the beach again! We are now living in beautiful Laguna Niguel. Our 16 year old daughter is making the transition as a Junior in High School to Capistrano Valley Christian High and our 19 year old daughter is having a great Freshman year at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. We feel blessed and look forward, God willing, to staying here for a long time. It has been great hearing from a few "old" friends on-line, hope to see more people at the 30 year reunion, sounds incredible that we are coming up on 30 Years! Best wishes to all. |

Grew up in Malibu. Graduated Samohi 1972. UCLA until 1977, worked for the Calif Parks Dept during college. Probably should have stayed there, but went to medical school instead. UCSD. Then residencies in Pediatrics and then Anesthesiology. Fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care. Horribly overtrained. Have worked in Wisconsin, Seattle, Mission Viejo (managed care sucked big time so) back to Wisconsin. Currently Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics, Director of Pediatric Anesthesia Residency and Fellowship at Medical College of Wisconsin and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. He is the leading authority on controlled group, affiliated service group, and leased employee issues. He lectures frequently for Sungard Corbel, the American Society of Pension Actuaries, the the National Institute of Pension Administrators, and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference.
He is an Editorial Advisor for the Journal of Pension Benefits and has written many articles for that publication and the Pension Actuary. He also writes the popular Who's the Employer column for BenefitsLink.
Mr. Watson is the managing partner of the Pension Information eXchange (PIX) computer BBS and has written the software used on the PIX system. He has a wife, two sons, and five cats.
His varied experiences range from doing standup comedy, to serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Iran, to editing and writing books and newsletters on a variety of topics, to directing choirs. He sings bass with the Santa Barbara Channel City Chorus of SPEBSQSA.

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Craig Perman Weisman; a gentle giant who devoted his life to being of service and who lived by the philosophy: "be the change you want to see in the world." Most recently employed as a Professor at UCLA and as a Psychologist in private practice, as well as with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept., he touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed. Robert Zeilstra attended Fort Lewis College from 1974-76 and earned first team All-RMAC honors as a senior and second team All-RMAC honors as a junior. He also played professionally for eight years in the Netherlands and was a member of two Dutch national teams that participated in the European Olympic preliminaries. Zeilstra was inducted into the Fort Lewis College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. He ranks 18th in school history in scoring with 948 points and eighth in rebounding with 538 caroms.
